10 Elements of a Strong Career Development Program (VIDEO & INFOGRAPHIC)

Career development programs are necessary if organizations want to build their employees’ competencies and commitment. In fact, these programs provide win-win outcomes for the company and its workforce.

Employers with active career development programs experience greater loyalty, productivity, and retention as well as decreased turnover.  Because company-sponsored career development activities increase employees’ awareness of promotional avenues within the organization, workers tend to have better morale arising from a feeling that their employer actually cares about the professional growth.  (Click here for my video on how a perceived lack of organizational caring for employees leads to burnout.)

But how do you get started?  What do you need to include in order to get the most “bang for the buck” in these programs?

In less than 5 minutes, this video will discuss the Top 10 important elements that are necessary to create a strong career development program that motivates and engages employees.

6 Cultural Characteristics of Innovative Companies (Infographic)

INFOGRAPHIC - 6 Cultural Characteristics of Innovative Companies

Innovation in business is defined as moving forward by implementing new, more effective processes, products, and ideas.  But such innovation cannot simply be demanded by organizational leaders.  The employees charged with the duty to innovate must be motivated and empowered to do so.  Unfortunately, that’s where many of the challenges of innovation emerge.

Employees will only unleash their creativity in the pursuit of more innovative business ideas IF the organizational culture fully supports their efforts.

There are 6 cultural characteristics that define an innovative company:

  1. Trust
  2. Integrity
  3. Respect
  4. Humility
  5. Faith
  6. Hope

But how do you encourage, support, and reinforce these cultural values throughout the workforce?

I have created an infographic to help.  This infographic not only defines each of these cultural characteristics, but also provides quick tips to introduce and sustain them within the workplace. Although I’ve included it in this post, you can download the pdf by clicking here.

Hiring for Competencies (VIDEO)

The world of work is changing rapidly and affecting both employees and the managers who must find the “right fit” in the hiring process.  Many of us feel overworked as we constantly strive to complete projects faster in the name of “efficiency.”

But this can lead to a major recruitment dilemma:  when you’re in a hurry to fill a job opening, it’s often tempting to hire “anyone” to do the job.  But this reactive strategy is done at your own peril!

Instead of striving to fill the job with “any warm body,” it’s critical that candidates are interviewed by focusing on the fit between their competencies and the job’s duties and responsibilities.

If you’re a job candidate, understanding this pervasive switch to competency-based hiring will drastically change the way that you prepare for a job interview.

In this 2-minute video, I offer 3 quick tips to help you understand the role of competencies in the hiring process.
